Our methodology

Advisor model 2.0.0: editorial guidance based on documented specifications.

  • Each result refers to an actual build and geometry row.
  • Scores are not independent ride tests or safety ratings.
  • Size recommendations are preliminary screening, not a professional bike fit.

Discipline weights (100 points)

  • The base weights below total 100 points for each discipline.
  • Terrain shifts a bounded number of points from motor/battery to geometry; fit and discipline labels have zero numeric weight.
  • With no budget limit, budget weight is removed and the remaining weights are normalized; budget is not awarded a perfect score.
  • The optional lightweight preference receives 8% of active weight; other active dimensions are scaled proportionally. When disabled, weight has no score, coverage penalty or ranking effect.

Preferred bands and directional adjustments

  • Geometry and suspension features score 100 inside their preferred bands. Larger is not automatically better.
  • For geometry and suspension, the score drops linearly to zero one full band-width beyond either boundary, then stays at zero.
  • Battery capacity, claimed torque and claimed peak power instead use the lower boundary as a minimum adequacy target. At or above it: 100, with no extra reward or penalty. Below it, the score falls linearly to zero over the configured interval width.
  • Motor target scores do not normalize Boost versus regular assistance, battery-dependent power limits or test protocols. Claims retain their sources and conditions; these scores do not establish climbing performance or motor control. Battery capacity alone does not establish range or a weight disadvantage.
  • Dimensions average only observed features, weighted by their evidence reliability.

  • Terrain changes head-angle and travel targets.
  • Handling changes reach and wheelbase targets only; these tendencies do not establish the complete handling of a bike.
  • Geometry gains exactly what motor/battery loses. Discipline labels never receive numeric points.

Terrain adjustments

  • Flowing: head-angle band 0.5°, front/rear travel bands -10 mm, geometry weight -2 points.
  • Mixed: head-angle band 0°, front/rear travel bands 0 mm, geometry weight 0 points.
  • Technical: head-angle band -0.5°, front/rear travel bands 5 mm, geometry weight 3 points.
  • Steep: head-angle band -1°, front/rear travel bands 10 mm, geometry weight 5 points.

Handling preferences

  • Agile: reach band -10 mm, wheelbase band -15 mm.
  • Balanced: reach band 0 mm, wheelbase band 0 mm.
  • Stable: reach band 10 mm, wheelbase band 15 mm.

Optional rider details

  • Rides longer than three hours raise the battery-capacity minimum target by 100 Wh.
  • Ascent over 1,000 m raises that target by another 100 Wh, for a combined 200 Wh. This is a capacity preference, not a range estimate.
  • Experience adds a novice caution only.
  • Inseam adds a clearance-data caution and does not improve fit confidence.
  • Optional lightweight preference: maximum score up to 21 kg, declining linearly to zero at 30 kg. No bonus below the target, and no inferred agility, range or safety advantage. Source weighing conditions remain visible; unknown weight reduces coverage only when enabled.

Suitability, coverage and confidence

How the score is calculated

  • Weighted coverage = sum of each dimension weight × its observed fraction, divided by active total weight.
  • Observed suitability = weighted mean of observed dimension scores, using those same observed weights.
  • Adjusted suitability subtracts 12 × (1 − coverage), capped to 0–100.
  • No observed data means zero suitability with zero coverage, not a measured failure.

What counts as evidence

  • Active fields: geometry 4; travel 2; components 7 (6 without an applicable rear shock); motor/battery 3, or 2 without torque; budget 1 when set; weight 1 only when requested. Fit screening and discipline labels never enter score coverage.
  • Manufacturer/verified evidence counts fully, editorial evidence 75%, estimated evidence 50%.
  • Manufacturer sizing and provisional sizing are both outside numeric suitability and coverage. Sizing still controls eligibility and confidence. Absent torque stays outside motor coverage; other missing active observations retain their uncertainty deduction.
  • Unknown fields stay unobserved. Documented components with no matching rule are separately labeled unassessed, not missing, zero or perfect.
  • Intended-use labels are catalogue metadata only. They neither award points nor penalize coverage; geometry and suspension bands assess documented suitability.

How confidence is limited

  • Data confidence is high from 80% weighted coverage, moderate from 55.00000000000001%, otherwise low.
  • Fit without a manufacturer height range caps overall confidence at low.
  • Undocumented geometry setup or reduced-reliability evidence prevents high confidence.
  • Fit-screening confidence itself is never high from height alone.

How results are ranked

  • Eligible build/size combinations are ranked by adjusted suitability, then coverage, then stable slug/build/geometry IDs.
  • Only the highest-ranked configuration of each model is retained, before taking up to five distinct models. Fewer may qualify.
  • Other eligible sizes for the displayed build appear within its result, with their own scores and fit caveats; they are not duplicate recommendations.

Fit is screening, not confirmation

  • Inclusive manufacturer height ranges take precedence and cannot be overridden by geometry.
  • A matching manufacturer height range passes the fit gate with moderate screening confidence, without adding or subtracting suitability points.
  • Without a manufacturer range, both reach/height (2.35–2.85 mm/cm) and stack/height (3.15–4.1 mm/cm) must pass broad heuristic bounds. This provisional check retains an internal cap of 65, but does not contribute to suitability or coverage. Confidence remains low.
  • Missing reach or stack makes heuristic fit unassessable and ineligible.
  • All sizing assessments remain outside numeric suitability and its coverage denominator. Manufacturer and provisional checks still control eligibility; provisional sizing caps overall confidence at low.
  • Standover, dropper insertion, proportions, flexibility and a real test ride remain necessary.

Strict budgets and price limits

  • Budget is a hard eligibility gate, never silently expanded.
  • We use the catalogue’s latest non-historical current/MSRP EUR selection, preferring native EUR over conversion.
  • A known tax-inclusive price at or below the limit passes and scores 100; an over-limit price fails.
  • Missing convertible prices are unpriced, and excluded/unspecified taxes cannot establish within-budget eligibility.
  • Without a budget those builds remain clearly labeled, but price does not gate them.
  • Regional availability, delivery and changing prices are not guaranteed.

Build quality, equipment tiers and intended use

  • Supported family and equipment rules below contribute. Name normalization handles documented ordering, F-S/P-S abbreviations and known spelling aliases while retaining the original source text. Explicit damper/platform rules take precedence over conservative family rules. Conflicting rules at the same specificity, unresolved alternatives and reviewed contradictions stay unrated.
  • Equipment scores are editorial preferences based on documented adjustment options, repairability and construction. They are not measured damping, braking power or reliability. Discipline-specific scores prevent a gravity-oriented damper or a trail wheelset from being the best choice for every use. Brake families retain duty scores without an invented luxury-trim bonus.
  • The component dimension keeps its published discipline weight. Its seven equal-share fields are fork chassis, brake duty, fork damping, rear shock, drivetrain, wheels and tyres. Travel stays separate. A sourced not-applicable rear shock is excluded; missing, configurable or reviewed-but-unrated equipment remains a coverage gap.
  • Example: two FOX forks with the same chassis can receive different damping scores when GRIP and GRIP X2 are explicitly documented. Factory and Performance Elite with the same supported damper score equally. SRAM GX, X0 and XX Transmission share a platform score; a costly derailleur does not establish the quality of every cassette, chain or shifter in a mixed build.
  • Every current published component description has a sourced rule or an explicit review limitation. Family-only specifications can receive a conservative assessment at 75% rule reliability; they do not inherit unlisted features from a premium trim. A new unsupported description remains unassessed until reviewed. Brand, price, carbon and electronics alone do not establish quality.
  • Tyre assessment distinguishes tread family from casing. Explicit EXO, EXO+, DoubleDown, DH, Trail and Gravity specifications take precedence over conservative tread-family rules. In mixed pairs the weaker documented casing sets the use preference. Missing compounds or one-sided casing detail are not silently completed; scores do not predict grip, pressure, wear or puncture resistance.

Reviewed specifications that remain unrated

These 58 exact field/description records were reviewed on 4 November 2026. Each retains the reason a numeric assessment would overstate the available evidence. They still reduce coverage. Original specification sources retain their own consultation dates.

Setup and component compatibility

  • Compare the actual build, size, model year and geometry setting. Wheel diameter, mixed-wheel configuration, fork travel and flip-chip position must match the selected geometry row. Custom builds are assessed only for equipment fixed in that configuration.
  • PR/PX offer selectable factory and single-adjustment presets from page 24 of their maintenance manuals. They do not reconstruct all 40 combinations. Only the three documented dimensions are populated; unspecified reach, wheelbase and other dimensions stay unknown. Detail and comparison links preserve the exact preset.
  • Start from the bike and suspension manufacturers’ guidance for riding weight including kit: sag, air pressure or coil spring rate, rebound, compression and volume spacers. Adjustment range describes potential, not a correct tune; more adjusters do not guarantee a better ride.
  • Check tyres as a system with the wheels: tread, compound, casing, rim width, pressure, inserts and total system load. Inspect brake rotor size, pad compound and bedding-in for the intended descents. These details can matter more than a finish or price tier.
  • Check the complete drivetrain, gear range, chainline, wear and replacement cost. For wheels, inspect rim construction, hub/freehub serviceability, spokes, load rating and intended-use approval. Carbon and electronic shifting are not automatic upgrades in suitability.
  • Actual rider setup, tyre grip, brake heat management, maintenance condition and complete mixed-build compatibility are not numerically assessed by the current data. No universal pressure or sag value is invented. Confirm the exact specification and tune it before interpreting the ranking.

Provenance and honest limitations

Traceable sources

  • Each scored observation retains manufacturer/source IDs, its field, rule, preferred band and contribution.
  • Sources and consultation dates appear in result evidence and bike details.
  • Manufacturer claims are not independent verification; missing values remain unknown.
  • Geometry deltas flag different sizes, setups and measurement conditions.
  • Bars share a zero baseline per field. Bike overlays scale shared artwork by reach and stack; they do not reconstruct actual frame shapes, wheelbase or angles.

Before making a decision

  • Coverage describes evidence availability, not product quality. A high score with low coverage is uncertain.
  • These editorial bands have not been calibrated against independent ride tests.
  • Battery capacity cannot predict range, and no single dimension determines handling.
  • Adjust answers, inspect sources and verify final setup, fit, price and availability before purchase.
